The Motoring Assistance People
Originally established in 1932 as the Company of Veteran Motorists to combat the increasing number of road accidents, GEM Motoring Assist is the UK’s leading driving based Road Safety association with around 70,000 members. All set a good example on the road by agreeing to drive with care, courtesy and concentration.
Road Safety Initiatives
GEM’s registered Road Safety Charity funds the organisations campaigning and Road Safety activities. Many schemes and research projects have been supported by the GEM Motoring Assist Road Safety Charity over many years. Recently these have included research into what the nation’s Road Safety targets beyond 2010 should be, plus schemes aimed at improving the safety of inexperienced drivers and motorcyclists.
Breakdown Cover
Since its introduction in 1978, our low cost Breakdown Cover has always been popular amongst members. One phone call to our 24 hour Rescue Control Centre and a trained operator will quickly arrange assistance from one of our nationwide network of over 6,000 recovery vehicles.
There are two comprehensive schemes to choose from, Recovery EXTRA and Recovery RECLAIM.
Both products offer the same extensive UK wide coverage while our Recovery RECLAIM requires you to pay the recovery operator and then claim the costs back from us. This gives you the added option of being able to make your own arrangements with a garage of your choice. Owners of specialist cars particularly welcome this scheme which has been specifically designed for GEM members.

Club Membership
Breakdown cover is only available to Club members. Club membership is included in the annual subscription to any of our Breakdown Services*. Benefits include a lively quarterly magazine, Good Motoring; free Road Safety and motoring advice, a wide range of information leaflets and discounts on many services such as: insurance, vehicle inspections, airport parking and a host of others. GEM members also benefit from a free Accident Management Service’ which will take all the strain out of managing the whole claim process should they be involved in a road crash, whether they are to blame or not. The scheme allows members to decline the additionally and costly legal expenses insurances offered with most motor insurance policies. Club Membership is also open to motorists not requiring Breakdown Cover.
In addition, members have a voice on Road Safety and motoring matters through the organisation’s membership of The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) and The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) National Safety Committee.
