GEM WARNS: Don't get stuck down Lovers' Lane this Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, meaning a romantic weekend away for couples in the UK will definitely be on the cards. Road safety and breakdown organisation, GEM Motoring Assist is warning road users not to be too adventurous this Valentine’s Day in case they get stuck down Lovers’ Lane! With the onslaught of bad weather over the past couple of months, roads all across the country have been badly damaged particularly little country roads off the beaten track and can be a danger to drivers looking for a quiet romantic spot!

GEM is urging couples to stay away from smaller roads AND put more planning into their romantic getaways. At this time of year it is important to be prepared for any trip and GEM is encouraging drivers to ensure that their car has been fully checked and is ready for the journey. There is nothing worse than a perfect weekend being ruined because of a breakdown or getting stuck in the middle of a field!

GEM’s top tips for a smooth romantic getaway this Valentine’s Day

  • Always keep emergency supplies in your boot in case the worst happens including a torch, triangle, rug, gloves, jump leads, a bottle of water and fluorescent and reflective jacket / tabard
  • Check the weather at your destination before setting off
  • Give yourself time to check over your vehicle before you travel
  • Clear your car of ice, snow and other debris, especially the lights and all windows
  • Charge your mobile phone and keep it with you in the car
  • Remember, there could be ice on the road, even if you cannot see it
  • Make sure you have enough fuel for the journey and never travel without cash
  • Avoid dirt tracks or very small country roads that you are unfamiliar with wherever possible
  • Don’t always rely on your GPS system especially in the countryside
  • FINALLY: don’t be tempted to drink and drive. As well as the danger to other road users, there’s nothing remotely romantic about being pulled over and breathalised in front of your loved one

David Williams, CEO of GEM comments, “We are urging romantics looking to travel on Valentine’s weekend to be cautious this year as no one wants to be caught out in an embarrassing spot with their partner! Our aim is to help make road users’ journeys run as smoothly as possible and avoiding a breakdown can be simple if drivers follow sensible guidelines. After all, the hard shoulder of a motorway or being stuck in the middle of nowhere is hardly the most romantic gesture!”
