Since its formation in 1932 GEM has had ‘Road Safety’ as its principle aim. Both through its own initiatives and those supported by the GEM Motoring Assist Road Safety Charity, a vast number of safety schemes have been implemented.
History
GEM has been supporting Road Safety initiatives since it was founded in 1932. In 1985, it was felt that this support could be better achieved by the establishment of a registered Road Safety Charity, which although administered and supported by GEM, would be independent from the other aspects of GEM’s work.
Since then, the GEM Road Safety Charity has provided financial support for a huge number of schemes throughout the UK. The charity has a board of registered trustees that receive requests for assistance and, following recommendations from the Guild’s Executive Council allocates financial assistance to schemes it feels are worthwhile in Road Safety terms.

Aims and objectives of the GEM Road Safety charity
The Guild was founded in 1932 under the original name The Company of Veteran Motorists and immediately supported road safety initiatives, both from within its own organisation and from other agencies.
In 1985 it was felt that this support could be better achieved by the establishment of a registered road safety charity, which although administered and supported by GEM, would be independent from the other aspects of the Guild’s work.
Since 1985 the GEM Road Safety Charity has provided financial support for a huge number of schemes throughout the UK.
The charity has a board of registered trustees that receive requests for assistance and following recommendations from the Guild’s Executive Council, allocates financial assistance to schemes it feels are worthwhile and effective in road safety terms. The trustees also take into consideration the availability of the other funds open to applicants.

Can you help the GEM Road Safety Charity?
2010 Campaign
In 2009 the GEM Road Safety Charity directed much of its funding to the significant problem of drug driving. Sponsorship of the website Get Clued Up will provide an on-going resource for teachers, students and parents to use to combat this growing problem amongst young drivers. Many experts have described the problem of drug driving as significant as drink driving and GEM will continue to direct resources to this initiative in 2010.
Illegal drugs are not the only impairment problem. Medication supplied by Doctors or Pharmacists can sometimes affect a driver’s ability to be safe on the road and to encourage more debate on this subject GEM has produced a leaflet, ‘Don’t Motor on Meds’ which we hope will be available in surgeries and clinics throughout the UK
Cycling is increasing but so too the crashes involving them. In 2010 we will be supporting a national campaign by The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust to encourage school aged cyclists to always wear a helmet. We will also be re-issuing our free booklet on safe family cycling.
The Charity will also be considering any other calls for Road Safety funding it receives from outside groups and with the proposed reduction in Government public expenditure the GEM Charity can play a vital role in life saving initiatives.
