Age shall not disqualify us
Are older drivers really such a bad risk, or is it more the case that such accidents tend to be high profile ones attracting publicity, asks Stuart Bladon. Many insurers regard people over 50 as a very good risk and offer favourable rates; is there a transition time when drivers suffer deteriorating faculties and become a worse risk? ABI statistics show a steady decline in average accident claims from an enormous peak of £1,650 for 17-18 year-olds to only £200 for 56 year-olds. There is then a slight increase at 76 and almost a doubling to £400 for over-85s.

Four go easy in west Wales
We organised a type test of four people carriers, which we conducted on the beautiful roads of Carmarthenshire. On test were a Volkswagen Sharan, Renault Espace, Chevrolet Orlando and Mazda 5. Read the reviews and verdicts.

Tread carefully
A new label, to be attached to all new tyres in the European Union before sale, will give motorists an at-a-glance comparison on three aspects of tyres, starting from November 2012. The label will carry three pieces of information – a rolling resistance rating, a wet braking rating and an external noise rating – and the EU legislator and tyre manufacturers both hope that this will help consumers make informed choices. But what is the truth about the use of winter tyres? Is it all a big marketing ploy, or can they help you stop more effectively in cold weather and on poor road surfaces? Jack Lewars went to a test trach in Luxembourg to find out.
