Why pre-holiday oil level checks are insufficient

Cartoon Car

With the holiday season edging closer every day, it is a wise idea to prepare your car in good time. Whether engaging in a road trip, or driving to an airport and back, sustained high-speed trips in hot weather are especially strenuous on your vehicle. In this blog, engine oil is examined.

Getting hot

Most cars possess a temperature gauge but this monitors engine coolant, only. It does not consider oil temperature. Generally, engine oil temperatures rise with engine load, which is why they tend to peak under typical motorway conditions - reaching over 100 degrees Celsius in many cases. This is relevant, because, for every 10 degrees Celsius that oil temperature rises above 75°C, its deterioration rate doubles.

Considering that the risk of expensive engine failure is related directly to oil condition, it is a wise idea to pay extra attention to the lubricant. The first thing is to ensure that the level is between the minimum and maximum marks. A low level is more likely to make the oil run hotter. Ideally, it should be close to the maximum dipstick mark but should not exceed it. If you find that the oil line is above the maximum level, it is possible that the oil has been contaminated by fuel and so consult a garage for advice.

Aside from the level, consider lubricant condition. As higher temperatures break down the oil and deplete its protective additives, consider whether it is worth changing the oil (and filter) before you depart. This move will ensure that your engine is afforded maximum protection, while you can think about other issues, such as enjoying your holiday.
