Are you up to date on the Highway Code?
The Highway Code was first published on 13 April 1931.
There have been many changes and updates since then.
Are you familiar with the 2022 Highway Code updates?
The ‘hierarchy of road users’ places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. Those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others. This applies most (but not exclusively) to drivers of large goods and passenger vehicles, vans/minibuses, cars/taxis and motorcycles.
When people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way.
If people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way
People driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling must give way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing
If you’re driving and wish to overtake a cyclist, leave at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) when overtaking at speeds of up to 30mph, and giving them more space when overtaking at higher speeds
If you’re driving and wish to overtake someone on a horse, slow down to under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space.
