Dangers of used tyres highlighted… again

Cartoon Car

The Local Government Association (LGA) warns that motorists could be putting their lives at risk by buying dangerous second-hand tyres, because nearly half of them in certain UK regions were sold illegally.

Serious safety defects were found in the study, including unsafe repairs and incorrect labelling. Interestingly, some tyres on sale were nearly 30 years-old. While tyres of that age are not illegal, their safety is compromised. Tyres over ten years-old are banned for use on HGVs and current DfT proposals are looking to extend this to buses, coaches and trucks.

While the LGA, which represents councils in England and Wales, is urging motorists to check if potential second-hand tyre purchases are in good condition, this is almost impossible for a typical person to do. Like the National Tyre Distributors Association, GEM recommends that you steer clear of part-worns.

Cllr Simon Blackburn, Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, advises that,

“Used tyres might not be the best investment. New tyres are available to suit all budgets, provide a safer option and should last longer, meaning they may offer better value for money in the long term.

“Selling illegal used tyres to unsuspecting customers is a really serious offence and we encourage all motorists to report potential breaches of the law.”

Should you suspect that part-worn tyres are being sold in your area that do not comply with the relevant legislation, contact your local council’s Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506.
