Make your autumn miles count: GEM’s autumn tips for motorcyclists

  • Take extra care as low sun, wet leaves and colder roads reduce visibility and grip
  • Check tyres, brakes, lights and riding kit before every late-season journey
  • Prepare your bike for winter to prevent spring problems

Breakdown and road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging motorcyclists to enjoy late-season rides safely - and prepare their bikes for winter.

Government figures* show 386 motorcyclists were killed in Great Britain in 2025, while 5,710 were seriously injured. Motorcyclists accounted for one quarter of all road deaths.

GEM warns that autumn brings fast-changing conditions, including low sun, earlier darkness, rain, mist, wet leaves and mud. Riders should reduce speed, increase following distances and leave extra room for braking and cornering. A smooth riding style is vital where grip is reduced, says GEM.

For winter storage, GEM recommends cleaning and drying the bike, lubricating the chain, correcting tyre pressures and using a ventilated cover. Follow manufacturer guidance on fuel and battery care, use an appropriate smart charger if recommended, and keep the machine securely locked.

GEM head of road safety James Luckhurst said: “A fine autumn day offers a lovely way to your summer season, but road and weather conditions can change quickly. Look well ahead, expect slippery surfaces and ensure others can see you.

“Before setting out, check tyre pressures and condition, brakes, fluids, lights and controls. Wear warm, waterproof protective clothing, and keep your visor clean and mist-free.

“If you’re storing your bike for the winter, a little preparation now can prevent corrosion, battery failure and unwelcome expense when spring returns.”
