GEM welcomes the addition of roads policing to Home Office strategic plans
The high-level government document, published earlier this week, sets priorities that all police forces must address. It now recognises the importance of roads policing in disrupting crime and preventing harm.
GEM chief executive Neil Worth commented: “This is an excellent development which is long overdue.
“Roads policing has been in decline for too long. Through a grant from the GEM Road Safety Charity, we supported the production of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) 2020 report: Roads Policing and its Contribution to Road Safety, that was the first to call for the inclusion of roads policing in the Strategic Policing Requirement (SPR). It is great to see that these efforts have finally paid off.
“Some 1,700 people die on UK roads each year, with more than 25,000 people seriously injured*.
“We urge the government to reverse the long-term decline in roads policing and take immediate steps to implement this strategic requirement which will help make our roads safer and more secure.”
